General Data Protection Regulation – is your school prepared?

On 25 May 2018, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force and it’s important that you are proactive in preparing your school to deal with the changes.

As a business that deals with a large amount of personal data, WCBS is currently looking at what measures we can put in place to guarantee full compliance with the new rules, and we want to ensure that our schools are doing the same.

You may think you don’t constitute as an organisation who will be impacted by the GDPR, but if you process personal data of EU citizens, no matter where you are in the world, the new regulations will affect you. If a data breach were to occur, you could stand the chance of being fined significantly, it’s been said that up to €20m or 4% of annual global turnover can be enforced.

Since the news of the GDPR’s release, there have been an array of discussions and facts circulated around how to prepare. If you haven’t yet taken notice of this coming change it’s important to us that you are well informed, therefore we want to share some useful links with you.

Solicitors, Harrison Clark Rickerbys, have come up with a helpful guide on 10 Steps for Schools, and we feel it’s worth a read. Important tips such as appointing a Data Protection Officer (DPO) - which in some cases may be mandatory - performing audits, adequate staff training and how to deal with data breaches are shared.

Following this blog post, a number of customers have been asking about our stance in regards to GDPR. Data protection has always been a priority for us and with the arrival of GDPR we are focusing on ensuring full GDPR compliance. We are currently analysing PASS and 3sysACADEMIC to ensure that we enable our customers to meet the General Data Protection Regulations well before next May. We are working with solicitors, other advisers and interested parties to identify any areas of the system that require modification to support the new regulations. Our releases over the coming year will prioritise data protection as we work towards the GDPR deadline. In addition to this we will also be advising schools on the GDPR requirements using a variety of methods including this blog, webinars and our regular customer events to provide support to help them meet their obligations.
