Winners all round at The Vale for the 7th annual golf day

The threat of rain didn’t dampen the spirits of golf lovers as they gathered last week at The Vale Resort in Wales for the seventh annual international schools’ golf event.

Despite the gloomy forecast almost everyone kept dry all day and the course was in superb condition. The range of scores from a high of 44 points to a low of 9 points shows just what a challenge the National Course is.

The performance of John Gwyn Jones from Panyathip International School, Laos was exceptional, 10 clear of the field. He puts it down to his new clubs, but the handicap committee will be sitting before next year! He recaptured the trophy he last won in 2015.

Last year's winner Adam Drew of Headstart International School, Phuket battled well to overcome an injured hand to finish third.

As always there were some good tales from the field. These include the groin injury suffered by Andrew Wigford of TIC Recruitment with 5 holes to go. Apparently he played these on one leg - giving rise to a new expression - "A one-legged bandit". Danny Yeow's buggy driving ability (or lack thereof) earned him the Nearest-the-Farmer award following some brilliant advocacy for his case from Horace Vernall. The organiser, Tony Child, achieved a unique run of seven successive non-scoring holes, which actually takes some doing!

The day concluded with lively banter during dinner in the clubhouse, helped by wine sponsored by COBIS – a special thank you goes to Colin Bell.

International Schools Winner - John Gwyn Jones of Panyathip International School, Laos - with an incredible 44 points
